Details

Stephen Collins is CEO and founder of acidlabs. He has worked in the web industry as a developer, information architect and consultant for over 10 years. Yes, he’s that old.

He is a passionate evangelist for social computing, particularly as a tool for enhancing knowledge sharing and collaboration in business. He sees social computing adoption as a critical next step, particularly for government, and believes that organisations that fail to make the necessary cultural changes to deal with social computing are setting themselves up for failure in a world where collaboration and information sharing will be critical for success.

As something of an obsessive-compulsive when it comes to web standards he is happy to chew your ear off talking about XHTML, CSS, semantic structure, microformats and accessibility. Beware!

He works with individuals and organizations to introduce and effect change in knowledge work environments and to provide expert advice on information architecture, user centered design and accessibility. He helps to overcome challenges faced by business and facilitates implementation and delivery of real solutions to real problems.

Stephen blogs on matters (mostly) related to the work of acidlabs at the acidlabs blog. He also runs thoughtglue.com, an online resource for knowledge workers and their leaders and is a regular contributor at Web Worker Daily.

He has published the oft-downloaded ACME Guide. You can read more by following the link. He presented on development using the ACME toolset at webDU 2006.

He’s inspired by the work companies like 37signals, Citizen Agency, Tangler and Atlassian are doing - they are truly doing what they can to make their own business and the work they do for their clients something remarkable. It’s Seth Godin’s notion of the Purple Cow brought to reality.

Others who affect and inspire his work (in no particular order and certainly not exhaustive) include Stowe Boyd, Tara Hunt, Dr Andrew McAfee, Euan Semple, Seth Godin, Justin Herald, Guy Kawasaki, the Cubicle Commandos - Zern Liew and Lisa Messenger, Jesse James Garrett, Steve Krug, Jef Raskin and Stephen’s current and previous colleagues, Matthew Hodgson, Andrew Boyd and Donna Maurer. There are many more.

Stephen is a member of the Information Architecture Institute and Usability Professionals Association. He is also a life member of Electronic Frontiers Australia and an Electronic Frontier Foundation member.

In real life, you could describe him as “husband, Dad, web worker, gym junkie, rugby nut and Brumbies supporter.”
